About Afghanistan Justice Organization

The Afghanistan Justice Organization (AJO) is organized exclusively for the purpose of promoting legal reform through education and training and to advance free markets and individual liberty under the laws of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and include all purposes, powers, and privileges conferred upon the organization by the Law on Non-Governmental Organizations. The purposes of the AJO include:

(a) Improving and strengthening the formal justice institutions;
(b) Improving and strengthening the informal justice sector and establishing a mechanism to link the formal and informal justice sectors;
(c) Conducting seminars, conferences, and in-service training programs at the local, national, and international level to facilitate cooperation among Afghan- based justice institutions;
(d) Drafting policy papers, publishing books and other conducting research and analysis on legal issues concerning Afghanistan.

Job Summary

The main functions of an Editor/Reporter include arranging the written materials that would go for
publication and collecting the raw materials, check them and prepare them for the final
presentation/publication. This is a full time position based in Kabul, Afghanistan. The Editor/Reporter
will be responsible, under the direct supervision of the Chief Editor/Wekalat Magazine, Afghanistan
Independent Bar Association (AIBA), for activities related to Magazine in general and with the delivery of
final products in an efficient and accurate way.

Duties and Resposibilities

• The Editor/Reporter will be responsible for the following:
• Ensuring that the editorial attitude of the material that is created is in keeping with the publication needs and requirements.
• Checking the written materials by determining the content, accuracy, grammar, and style of the works.
• Overseeing the appearance and layout of articles thereby ensuring that the artwork and design of the photos accompanying the articles are appropriate.
• Conducting surveys, interviews and meetings with various groups, individuals, institutions to gather data, analyze and draft articles.
• Negotiating payments with the freelance writers
• Preparing reports from different sources as required
• Writing articles, reports, conducting interviews and research
• Liaising with the marketing team, production team and senior management to ensure timely delivery of the publication and resolve issues that interfere with internal operations
• Confer with senior management and the legal team on libel issues arising from published material; and convince the management on new story development, validating sources and making a case for approval to publish
• Allocating space for text and photos to various writers based on knowledge of layout principles Keeping tabs on customer and market response to content as well as monitoring the company's or publication's value
• Assist the editor is chief for monitoring magazine’s content and success
• Attention to detail and ultimately responsibility
• Final fact checker for all referenced portions of the work being published
• Ensure that the entire publication is properly laid out and full by conducting a final review before sending the publication to print
• Any other duty that may be assigned by the Supervisor.

Qualification

• 2 to 4 years of experience as Editor or Editor in Chief or reporter with a magazine or newspaper
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Innovative and creative bent of mind
• Attention to details
• Ability to work under stress and within deadlines
• Excellent sense of grammar and style
• Computer literacy to enable tracking of manuscripts and record keeping
• Knowledge of major issues and trends occurring in the media
• Good knowledge of the Afghan legal systems, laws, and procedure, as well as of Sharia principles
• Discretion and sound judgment in handling sensitive issues
• Ability to cooperate with others to achieve results and to establish and maintain effective working relations with the team
• Computer and research skills, including with internet (online) research
