About Afghanistan New Generation Organization

The Afghanistan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) is an Afghanistan-based organization and the most comprehensive journalist safety mechanism of any country in the world. AJSC maintains the largest database of media workers in Afghanistan, has national and provincial female coordinators to provide support to female media workers, publishes research on media and freedom of speech in Afghanistan, works closely with the Afghan government to develop media laws and provides emergency support to journalists in conflict. AJSC operates under the umbrella of the Afghanistan New Generation Organization (ANGO), an Afghanistan-based NGO that works on projects related to youth in Afghanistan.

Job Summary

The Advocacy Officer is responsible for creating a network of and advocating for civil society institutions, human rights defenders, journalists and other media workers and media outlets. This will include overseeing AJSC’s Brave Women Award, organizing events and traveling throughout the country.

Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position are broken into the three categories of Networking, Event Organization and Reporting.

• Meet with civil society institutions, human rights defenders, journalists and other media workers and media outlets
• Create network of human rights defenders and journalists, and follow up on cases of violence against any members of these groups
• Research issues of importance and advocate for human rights defenders and journalists with the media and government institutions
• Travel to the provinces to advocate for human rights defenders and journalists
• Organize press conferences to discuss issues of importance to human rights defenders and journalists
• Represent AJSC in media, human rights and other conferences inside Afghanistan
• In coordination with senior management, meet with media and provide media interviews on AJSC’s behalf
• Advocate for laws to create a more enabling environment for human rights defenders and journalists

Event Organization
• Organize at least six events per year in each of AJSC’s eight zones nationally
• Travel to the provinces to facilitate events
• Oversee application, selection and award process of AJSC’s Brave Woman Award

• Submit monthly reports to senior management
• Assist in other tasks as assigned
