AUAF Background:
The American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) is a private, non-profit university offering an American-style liberal arts education. We opened our doors in 2005 and currently offer four undergraduate academic majors and an MBA program. We follow a strict non-discriminatory policy and applicants from all ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. We are a young and growing dynamic university with a student population of nearly 1,100 and we hope to reach 1,250 students by the fall 2017 academic semester. We have expanded operations to the 75-acre international campus across the street from our original campus. Construction is ongoing for additional classroom and lab buildings to help meet the growing needs of our student population.

Job Summary

The Office of Student Affairs is an integral part of the university’s plans to provide student support services equivalent to those found in American colleges and universities while reflecting the special needs and circumstances of a unique Afghan student body. The Student Affairs department is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time position as Residence Hall Coordinator based in Kabul.

Duties and Responsibilities

Student/Community Development

• On call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week based on Residence Hall schedule;
• Reside in and oversee day-to-day operations of assigned AUAF Residence Hall;
• Demonstrate care and concern for residents’ personal and educational welfare;
• Have daily interaction with all residents;
• Provide mentorship and assist residents with personal and educational matters;
• Oversee and assist with the planning and implementation of programs and activities for residents;
• Provide guidance and direction to the Resident Assistant staff in creating programs that meet the social, educational, developmental, recreational and personal well-being of the resident students;
• Work with the Security, Transportation, Cafeteria, University Clinic, and other key offices to ensure that the needs of the residents are being addressed in the best possible manner;
• Work with the Resident Assistants to ensure residents take responsibilities for cleanliness of personal spaces including but not limited to rooms and bathrooms;
• Provide oversight and guidance for residents in preparations of meals not served in the university cafeteria;

Staff Selection, Supervision, Development

• Supervise, train and evaluate Resident Assistants and ensure completion of their duties as assigned;
• Assist Resident Assistants and/or other designated university officials with room inspections;
• Directly supervise and monitor the janitorial staff in their duties in providing cleaning services for the residence hall to include, but not limited to common rooms, bathrooms, kitchen and ensuring staff that student bedding and towels are washed weekly;

Administrative Responsibilities

• Maintain on-going communication and cooperation with the Student Development Specialist and/or the Office of Student Affairs;
• Regarding any student conduct issues
• General and emergency welfare concerns of residents
• Facilities and maintenance concerns
• Safety and security matters
• Student transportation matters
• Personal absences from the Residence Hall
• Report maintenance and facility concerns to the Facilities Staff including doing any needed follow-up to ensure those issues are addressed;
• Attend and Assist with university events, including but not limited to: Residence Life programs, New Student Orientation, Commencement, and Fun Fair;
• Other duties as assigned by the supervisor of the Residence Life Program and/or Director of Student Affairs;

Student Conduct

• Enforce all the policies, procedures and regulations of residential living with the students;
• Assist and guide the Resident Assistants in your role of enforcing all the policies, procedures and regulations;
• Ensure that all student conduct issues are documented and reported to Student Conduct in the Student Affairs Office;

Professional Development

• Attend and participate in Resident Assistant training in August and January every year;
• Participate in ongoing training and professional development sessions under the direction of the Student Development Specialist;


RESIDENCE LIFE POLICIES

Key Security
• AUAF keys should NEVER be given to other non-Residence Life staff member without proper consultation;
• Caution must be taken to ensure the security of any and all AUAF keys-loss of keys must be reported immediately to the Student Development Specialist and all costs associated with replacing these keys may be incurred by the RHC. The loss of keys could lead to termination;
• The spare keys for all student rooms and common spaces are to be kept with RHCs unless special permission has been given to an RA (such as when an RA provides vacation coverage for an RHC);
• Misuse of AUAF keys, or violation of these key policies, may be cause for termination;

Guest Policy

• RHCs may be permitted to host guest(s) of the same gender. RHCs and guests must follow proper procedure as outlined in Residence Life. RHC’s guests will be approved on a case by case basis;
• All guest(s) must register in the log book and leave an ID with the security officer;
• Guest(s) or the RHC, who has invited them, must sign the log book in English so the Residence Staff are able to view and verify who has signed in and in the facilities;
• Guest(s) must be escorted by their hosts and accompanied at all times within the residence halls;
• RHCs are responsible for the behavior of their guests. Any kind of property damage caused by the guest should be compensated by the host;
• Any disturbances caused by the guest will also have consequences for the RHC who hosted them;

Classes

• In order to take classes, the RHC’s class schedule must be approved by the Student Development Specialist before the class registration;

Evaluations

• Evaluations will occur twice yearly. In December, each RHC will be evaluated through an internal Student Affairs process. In April, each RHC will be evaluated through the official AUAF evaluation process;

Vacation

• The preferred time to schedule vacation is during standard university breaks, such as but not limited to winter and summer break. All vacation time must be pre-approved

Qualifications

• Ability to promote the mission and values of the Office of Student Affairs and AUAF
• Knowledge of policies and procedures of an academic environment
• Knowledge of theory/practice of a residential living/learning facility
• Excellent command of English language
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism
• Ability to operate a personal computer including Microsoft Office programs
• Willingness to working with a diverse group of faculty, staff, and students
• Willingness to attend and seek on-going professional training and development of skills
