Job Summary

Shajjan & Associates is currently seeking applications for a Senior Lawyer position. The Senior Lawyer will advise on technical, strategic and procedural aspects across the spectrum of legal issues. Like all team members, s/he will work in a fast-paced environment on multiple engagements simultaneously. S/he will serve as the primary point of contact for clients during the course of any work engagement. As such, s/he will be responsible for managing relationships with organizational leaders, some of which can be complex or sensitive. The Senior Lawyer will be responsible for ensuring the meeting of milestones and deadlines by communicating clearly with clients on topics such as overall engagement objectives, work plan and key findings; managing internal teams; delegating tasks to team members; supervising the work of junior lawyers and, coordinating with partners and other members of the Law Firm.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide high quality legal services to all Shajjan & Associates’ clients ranging from individuals to corporations, diplomatic missions and international organizations in Afghanistan and worldwide;
• Receive requests for legal advice from current and potential clients and decide on the most appropriate responses to be delivered;
• Establish what is necessary to solve clients’ problems;
• Advise clients on law, legal procedures and a wide range of associated issues;
• Advise clients on their rights and responsibilities;
• Represent clients before the court of law and/or governmental and non-governmental bodies;
• Attend and represent Shajjan & Associates at client meetings and work on clients’ wants and expected outcome;
• Develop and maintain productive working relationships with clients and gain their confidence and that of other professionals;
• Report to clients on regular basis via e-mail, phone-call and through in person meetings;
• Interpret laws, regulations and other legal documents for clients where requested and research in national and international laws and legal documents to write legal advice, opinions, and memos;
• Provide estimations, and decide on each case’s timeline;
• Assign junior associates in team works and make sure deadlines are met;
• Review tasks and ensure that deliverables are prepared to satisfy professional requirements;
• Convey a professional image of Shajjan & Associates’ team and services to the existing and potential clients and professional contacts;
• Cultivate and develop professional relationships at senior levels and establish and maintain a key network of senior level contacts in Afghanistan and worldwide;
• Assist partners and other senior team members in their counseling and litigation work;
• Make constructive contributions to management and development of the Law Firm;
• Any other tasks that may be assigned by the Management

Skills

Qualifications

• Licensed by the Afghanistan Independent Bar Association;
• Bachelor’s degree in law with a minimum of seven years of actual experience in the practice of law or a master’s degree with a minimum of five years of such experience;
• Communication proficiency in written and spoken English in addition to such proficiency in one of Dari or Pashto;
• Excellent legal writing skills in English in addition to such excellence in one of Dari or Pashto;
• Organized and detail oriented;
• Excellent time management skills;
• Ability to prioritize projects, take direction, and meet deadlines;
• Ability to work independently and in a team;
• Genuine interest in the mission of Shajjan & Associates.
