About Ministry of Public Health

The health status of the approximately 25 million Afghans is among the worst in the world. The infant mortality rate is 140 per 1,000 live births (UNICEF, MICS 2003) and the maternal mortality ratio has been estimated to be 1,600/100,000 live births. The nutritional status of children and women is very poor. The poor health status of women and children is exacerbated by a very high fertility rate and low contraceptive prevalence. Most of the burden of disease results from infectious causes, particularly among children where diarrhea, acute respiratory infections, and vaccine preventable illnesses which likely account for 60% of deaths. Among adults, tuberculosis accounts for an estimated 15,000 deaths per year with 70% of detected cases being among women (WHO 2001).
