The objective of the Organization is to improve livelihoods for all sections of the rural community based upon economically viable activities â€“ food production, off-farm employment and trade - social cohesion and sustainable use of natural resources.
FAO works with three counterpart ministries â€“ the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, the Ministry of Energy and Water and the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development. The FAO Representation is based in Kabul with regional offices in Herat, Jalalabad, Kandahar, Mazar-i-Sharif and Faizabad and subregional offices in Bamyan, Farah, Ghazni and Kunduz.
FAO assistance in Afghanistan is centered on six priority areas of support agreed with the Government: Fostering agricultural productive capacity; Improved water resource and irrigation management; Formulation and implementation of effective agricultural policies; Improved natural resource management, through sustainable environmental management; Food and nutrition security and enhanced institutional capacities to address issues regarding food safety and quality; Capacity development for emergency management.
Reporting Lines / Supervision Received/Exercised:
The Communication & Knowledge Management Associate works under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative and the direct supervision of the Assistant FAOR (Programme) and technical guidance of the Media Relation Office at RAP (FAO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok), in close collaboration with the partnership and Resource Mobilization Officer and project management and administrative staff in FAO Afghanistan. The incumbent operates independently and takes decisions on work priorities. Supervision received is focused on the quality of work outputs. He/ she provides guidance and advice to other communication and knowledge management related support;
The Communication & Knowledge Management Associate works closely with the wide range of colleagues in the FAO Representation and with the client departments, offices and projects, ensuring the consistency and quality of communication support services provided by the FAO Representation;

Duties and Responsibilities
Collect and collate information from all FAO projects and prepare updated inventory of achievements on a semi-annual basis ;
Consult with the CTAs of various FAO projects at least once a month for updated information and guidance on items for wider communication;
Work closely with the Information Division of the Ministry of Agriculture (MAIL), specifically for disseminating information and reports;
Identify priority areas in communication in close coordination with Programme unit, for inclusion in the communication strategy plan and make sure these are regularly update and to reflect current FAO representation /country office as well as global priorities.
Design a monitoring and evaluation plan for the strategy, including the development of indicators, baselines, and regular evaluations of progress made;
In close cooperation with the Communication Specialist and Programme, maintain and regularly update the FAO - Afghanistan website and social media channels to increase engagement with the public, farmers, partners, donors and other key stakeholders;
Maintain inventory of the FAO publications, bulletins, reports, etc. and provide users with information from them;
Prepare synopsis of FAO publications, bulletins, reports, etc. for the use of mass media, including web-based media, as appropriate;
Facilitate translation of FAO materials into both Dari and Pashto, specifically targeting mass media;
Facilitate media interviews with FAO Representative and other FAO personnel under the authorization of the FAO representative/ country director;
Respond to information requests from media with clearances of the FAO Representative/ Country Director;
Assist FAO representative/ country director to coordinate media information on agricultural related events, situational analyses with line ministries, UNAMA and the UN Country Team;
Assist FAO-R (Programme) Prepare and disseminate media statements on behalf of FAO upon the approval of FAO representative/ country director;
Assist Communication Consultant and other concerned staff in preparation of brochures, videos and other promotional materials on results of FAO Programme and achievements, in close collaboration with the Partnership and Resource Mobilization officer;
Assist the Assistant FAO-R (Programme) in preparation of the annual and other internal reports;
Collecting information from field and generating case studies, lesson learn reports, facilitating the documentaries and experts for generating the best practices etc.
Updating the project tools and database with the latest information and making it ready for internal and external circulation
Represent the Organization at official meetings and events, identify strategic partnerships, advocates best practices and increased policy dialogue and develop and negotiate effective working relationships/ consensus and agreements with national stakeholders;
Provide up to date information on the projects on FAO Afghanistan website;
Document field activities through reports, photos and blogs;
Performs other related duties/functions as assigned by the supervisor;

University degree in Journalism, Communication, Media, Social Science, Public Relations, Business Administration, Agriculture or closely related field;
At least seven (07) years of relevant work experience in the field of communication, journalism, advocacy, social media, public information management, agriculture, or closely related disciplines with international NGOs, Government of Afghanistan, or UN Organization in a multi-cultural offices environment is required;
Previous work experience with UN is an advantage;
Other Desirable Skills:
Demonstrated knowledge of press and broadcast media, ability to change and evolve in response to clients’ needs, ability to communicate with people at difference levels, ability to assimilate a large amount of detailed information from TV, radio and print sources into readable summaries of main points and issues is essential;
Strong interpersonal and communication, reporting and presentation skills, analysis and interpretation of data, ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity
Understanding FAO’s mandate and its global context; planning, organizing, and delivering quality results;
Communicating to build understanding & support; working together in teams and partnerships; engaging in continuous learning
Good skills in computer applications and proficiency in the use of the Internet as a research tool are required;
Good understanding and Familiarity with UN development/ humanitarian program and working methods, particularly with FAO policies, financial and budget, administration and programming procedures is an asset.
Excellent knowledge of English and local languages, both spoken and written skills.
