About UNESCO Kabul

Great progress has been made in access to education in Afghanistan and the number of students
has increased many folds since 2001. However, the quality of the education delivered still requires
improvement. The Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan acknowledges that the
previous curriculum no longer met the needs of Afghanistan in the 21st century, both in content and
in quality, and therefore, has initiated curriculum reform for basic and general education. UNESCO
is the supporting partner for this process, supporting the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the
General Directorate for Curriculum and Textbook Development (GDC) in this large endeavour.
