Job Summary

Overall Purpose of the Role

Reporting to the Editor, the Freelance television presenter (female) will be one of two hosts of Open Jirga, our 60-minute television weekly production. The female presenter will engage on-screen with high profile policy makers, politicians and celebrities, to enable audience members to ask them questions, and ensure answers. The on screen presenter will interact directly with studio-based audiences from across Afghanistan and she will research, write and edit scripts for the main productions as well as present/voice over trailers and cross-promotional slots for television, and social media. The freelancer will work as part of a team of international and national staff BBC staff, and will be expected to follow and implement direction from the Editor and Head of Production.

Duties and Responsibilities

Main duties

• Co - anchor a weekly multi-camera and multi-platform debate series
• Work comfortably with a co-presenter
• Interviewing, writing and on-screen presenting
• Work on her research per program and be knowledge about the guests, audience and the themes per show
• On the day of recordings work with the Editor, choosing the question and answers from audience and finalizing scripts
• Help generate original ideas for on screen content and cross promotional trailers
• Work with editor to ensure audience insights are fed into the series
• A good understanding of political issues in Afghanistan
• Adhere to BBC Editorial Guidelines and BBC Industry Codes of Practice, and the observance of BBC’s Health and Safety Regulations

Essential skills, knowledge and experience

• Experience interviewing high profile policy makers, politicians and celebrities
• Fluent in Pashto and Dari
• Understanding of Afghanistan media audiences
• Proven skills in English speaking, reading and writing
• Ability to write scripts to tight deadlines
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to maintain a high standard of performance whilst under pressure
• An awareness of BBC production quality and standards
• Follow direction during the recordings from the Editor and Head of Production
• Work as a professional co presenter

Qualifications
