About UNESCO Kabul

In 2014, UNESCO organized an international competition for the Design of a Cultural Centre in Bamiyan
with the support of the Government of Afghanistan and the Government of Korea.
The site reserved by the Ministry of Information and Culture of the Afghan Government for the
construction of the Centre consists of 5 hectares of ground located on Chawni Hill, near the Police
Station. The slope of the site faces the cliff of the Buddhas to the North-west.
The program for the Centre, as detailed in the competition brief, comprised Exhibition Halls, an
Auditorium, a Tea-room and Shop open to the public, a series of Workshops and Classrooms destined for
community use and an Administrative Section.
The winning design organized this Program into 3 separate buildings; one for public events (Exhibition
Halls and Auditorium), one for community use (Workshops and Classrooms) and one for administration
(Offices and Meeting Room).
The construction of 2 of these three buildings is currently underway; the Public Building with the
exhibitions halls and the auditorium, and the Educational Building consisting of workshops.
