Duties and Responsibilities

Translates and interprets from English into Pashto or Dari and translates and interprets from Pashto or Dari into English for the Defense Attaché Office (DAO) and when mission dictates, a mission-wide audience to include the Ambassador, DCM and other sections of the Embassy. Is expected to translate for visiting DoD VIPs and a large number of Defense Department personnel in several military facilities and ministries and on occasion other VIP missions such as CODELS, and cabinet level dignitaries and other Foreign Affairs Agencies. Liaison with Afghanistan Military, Ministry of Defense and other Government officials on military related matters. Research, follow, and translate open source materials.

Ability to provide translations that convey both the nuanced meaning and tone of sensitive materials. Ability to employ proper idiomatic phrasing, syntactical structure and use of words accurately reflecting the wording and meaning of original materials. Strong interpersonal and cross cultural skills to enable communication and teamwork. Ability to type and use computers and email.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years’ experience in providing written and simultaneous translation from Dari/Pashto to English and vice versa is required.

JOB KNOWLEDGE: In addition to the required language knowledge, incumbent must be familiar with correspondence formats, specialized terminology used in the conduct of military, Foreign Affairs, political in order to provide accurate translations. Must be able to use proper idiomatic phrasing and syntactical structure so original meaning is accurately translated.

Education Requirements:
Completion of two years university-level education in a relevant area, including government, politics, military, Afghan languages, or foreign languages is required.

Evaluations:
LANGUAGE: Level 4 ability to speak/read in English. Level 4 (native) to speak/read in Pashto and Dari is required.

This may be tested.

Qualifications: All applicants under consideration will be required to pass medical and security certifications and complete a mandatory probationary period for LE Staff.
