Data Center Consultant

Job Summary

This position is responsible for managing the multiple site operations at AFTEL data centers including customer service as well as facilities engineering personnel; security staff, site facilities and maintenance, critical systems, security and surveillance systems, budgets, customer installations, and the overall customer experience.
The Data Center consultant will have full responsibility for all site activities, budget, vendor management, preventive and predictive maintenance programs, customer service, sales support, 100% uptime and SLA’s, personnel training and mentoring, teambuilding, and adherence to company policy and procedures through proactive leadership.
This position works closely in a team environment of other Data Center manager in developing policy, short and long term goals and objectives, and working on projects and process through collaborative teamwork.
Reporting to the Director of Network & Security, this position will require strong technical and business skills along with an extensive background in people management, best practices, data center operations, construction, quality, and the ability to work well in a demanding environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Operates and maintains of entire Afghan Telecom Datacenter systems to provide 24x7/365 forever delivery of uninterrupted service to critical data center infrastructure with all its related equipment.
• Work directly with IT senior management in Design & Engineering, Service Delivery/Provisioning, NOC, solutions engineers, and other implementation personnel to coordinate customer turn-ups, process flow, to ensure smooth transition from sales and customer implementation.
• Contractor bidding and award selection process, preventative and pro-active vendor maintenance contracts, contract security staff, and overall contract/vendor management and purchasing of goods and services.
• Direct management of Electrical, HVAC, Generator, Life Safety, and Building Monitoring systems to assure 100% uptime, proper operation, engineering excellence, corporate standards, and customer expectations in relation to the facility including corporate sponsored SLA's (AFTELKabul and Regional sites).
• Responsible for the design and creation of policies/procedures for operational excellence, process flow, and documentation. Works closely with auditors, landlords, and other support staff on documentation, SOPs, SLAs and site preparedness.
• Applies quality assurance processes to documentation and implementation of projects, modeling, and integration of systems including electrical, mechanical and computer software.
• Responsible for adherence to budget, corporate business controls, and procurement guidelines.
• Provides detail analysis and completed staff work including business case development and PowerPoint presentations to senior management.
• Provides site leadership, implements training, and acts as both a coach and mentor to site personnel.
• Effective time management and prioritization of work activities including email management, people management, customer drawing developments for installs, and timely response to customer quotes/installs/resolutions.
• Reconcile billing and vendor payments of services, goods, and customer installations with purchasing, accounts payable and accounts receivable
• Review and validation of existing system design projects and procurement or outsourcing plans for compliance with industry standards.
• Ensures that proposed and existing infrastructure architectures are aligned with organizational goals and objectives
• Manages the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, upgrade and support of all customer network operations based systems, including server hardware, server applications, operating systems, infrastructure hardware and software and other network/infrastructure related technologies.
• Develop business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for customer applications and system expenditures and initiatives.
• Manage security systems and security procedures.
• Monitors, forecasts, and reports capacity including identification of potential problems related to exceeding existing capacity with new equipment.
• Work closely with the Director, other data center manager, and operations team members to develop functional goals.
• Provide advice and project representation to Afghan Telecom application owners relating to operating systems, security, application deployment, ordering, equipment standards or any other responsibly technology.

• Perform other related duties as assigned by the line manager


• Certifications in CompTIA, Microsoft & Linux are preferred.
• Extensive experience/expert knowledge of electrical and mechanical design, maintenance, and problem resolution required.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously across multiple locations.
• Expertise in supporting BU goals, real estate requirements, design and engineering services, and other related construction/build objectives.
• Expert knowledge of critical systems including power, cooling, fire, and safety systems.
• Demonstrated experience in management of complex/cross functional IT projects including experience with business and technical issues.
• Demonstrated leadership in LEED and Green Building Technologies.
• Ability to identify and resolve problems independently.
• Ability to work flexible hours and be accessible 24/7/365.
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Working knowledge on Network equipment including Server, Storage Systems, Routers, Switch, firewall, sensors, load balancers, content filtering, spam filtering and other relevant technologies
• Strong English communication skills are preferred


• Minimum 5-10 years’ progressive management experience in data center and colocation industries. Demonstrated ability to effectively manage facilities, people, systems and budgets.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related fields.
