Job Summary:

FINCA is seeking a communications Associate. The Associate will gather photos and stories about FINCA client for use in FINCA’s fundraising/marketing material in United States and other countries.
The Associate also will support FINCA’s Marketing and communication team in the preparation of promotional materials that document the successes of and challenges faced by FINCA’s clients.
As a photographer, the Associate will need to combine artistic talent and technical skill to produce professional photographs, using tools-cameras and lighting- and judgment to create meaningful images of FINCA’s client. To gather stories, the Associate will need to build a rapport with FINCA’s clients that allows them to ask considerate but probing interview questions.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The communication Associate will gather and synthesize/process information on 25 FINCA clients per week who have received a loan disbursement form FINCA within the last two weeks or who will soon receive a loan disbursement. The Associate will gather the information from to FINCA affiliate’s management information system and through interviews with the clients. Based on this information, the Associate will write short stories, in English, for each client. The Associate will maintain a spreadsheet (Provided by FINCA International, F/I) and associated image files (I, e. photos) for these client’s records and electronically by FINCA International to F/I on a weekly basis. The Associate will update the information and stories on each client at or shortly after the close of their loan cycle. The data that the Associate will gather/track for each client shall include:
• From the Management Information System
o Client ID Number ( this data will facilitate finding and following-up with the client later)
o Client Loan Cycle
o Client Name
o Gender
o Loan Amount (in US dollars converted at the current exchange rate)
o Date of Loan Disbursement
o Loan term (in weeks)
o Business Type ( chosen form short list provided by F/I)
o City/Town of Residence
• From the Client Interview
o A story of the client’s life that covers the following:
 Marital status and age
 Number, gender and age of dependents (children, orphans, etc.)
 Events that have influenced her life (war, natural disaster, illness, etc)
 What her life was like before she became part of FINCA
 How she heard about FINCA
 Name of village banking group (if a group client)
 Amount and date of first loan from FINCA
 How FINCA (and access to credit) has changed her life
 Her greatest achievements and challenges since receiving a FINCA loan
 What she has learned from operating her own business
 How she feels about her association with FINCA
 How she plans to use her current loan
 Her plans/dreams for the future (both for her family and her business) and what FINCA can do to help her achieve them
o Photos
 Try to capture the client in action, in their business either performing their job (i.e., sewing , cooking tending a crop) or interacting with customers (providing a feel for the clients and their lives is what will hook prospective donors people and also set FINCA apart from competitors)
 If possible, pick a setting (location) has good natural light
 Take a formal portrait only if it is not possible to take a more casual candid photo
 Take multiple, high resolution photos of each client
 When you return to the office
 Review your photos
 Choose the best photo that you’ve taken
 Determine whether color correction, brightness, contrast or other image manipulation can improve the original photo
 Create Main Photo
 Crop the photo to focus on key elements (e.g., the client, her customer , the products she sells) and to remove distracting elements as well as to establish a width to height ratio of 4:3 (e.g., 1600 x 1200 pixels)
 Resize the photo to 800 x 600 pixels
 Save the photo
 Edit filename to match filename listed in the Excel spreadsheet

o Create Headshot
 Crop the photo to focus on the client’s face as well as to establish a width to height ratio of 1:1 (e.g., 300 x 300 pixels)
 Resize the photo to 50 x 50 pixels
 Save the photo
 Edit filename to match filename listed in the Excel spreadsheet
Initially, the profiles gathered by the Associate should be largely representative of the affiliate’s client base with respect to loan type (group loan vs. individual loan), business type (trading/retail, food preparation, agriculture/husbandry, services), and gender. Over time, as FINCA builds a better understanding or what type of client profiles are most attractive to donors, FINCA may issue instructions to focus more heavily on specific types of clients.

Job Requirement:

• Degree in journalism, communications and/or marketing;
• Practical experience in conducting interviews and familiarity with interviewing techniques;
• Proven skill in taking and editing digital photographs and/ or videos;
• Strong written and spoken communication skill in English;
• 2-4 years working experience; and
• Demonstrated computer skill.
