Job Summary:
Under the management and guidance of Kabul’s Communications and Public Outreach Team, the Communications Officer in Kandahar will assist with program activity reporting to USAID and in disseminating information to local audiences in the region to ensure that the project’s activities receive proper exposure in local language media outlets.
The Communications Officer is charged with helping to implement the Afghanistan Small and Medium Enterprise Development (ASMED) project’s communication strategy, under the direction and supervision of the Communications and Public Outreach Manager, based in Kabul. In collaboration with the Regional Manager, s/he will be responsible for all USAID reporting products, which include periodic reports, activity reports, and ad hoc information requests, as appropriate. S/he will stay informed of all of the regional office’s project activities and develop draft press releases and success stories to be disseminated locally and posted on the project’s website. S/he will develop a local network of media contacts to gain a better understanding of ways in which to have the project’s activities covered in various media outlets. S/he will develop a tracking mechanism to report on any media attention the project receives as well as to keep others informed of upcoming exposure. In addition, the Communications Officer will work with the Communications Office to develop outreach materials relating specifically to regional success stories, notable public events, and other materials as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
•Develop first drafts of success stories and press releases on regional ASMED activities
•S/he should develop a tracking mechanism to report on media attention the project receives and on upcoming activities and opportunities for positive exposure
•Work with Communications management staff to develop and print marketing and outreach materials for special events (such as banners, brochures, posters, etc.)
•Ensure appropriate branding and marking identity for all program activities
•Coordinate translation and interpretation services as necessary
•Take photographs at important events, draft short descriptions and record key outcomes
•Summarize and submit program highlights weekly; in collaboration with regional office management and technical staff, draft comprehensive monthly and quarterly reports
Job Requirement:
•Excellent written and spoken English language abilities
•Work experience in an international donor funded project
•Ability to understand and effectively convey key program messages to appropriate audiences
•Undergraduate degree in Communications, Journalism, or something similar or equivalent practical work experience
•Knowledge and experience in providing presentations and public statements
•Excellent report writing skills
•Strong Public Relations skills
•Proven organizational skills
•Computer proficiency
