Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Director of Water, Sanitation and Infrastructure, and in collaboration with other project technical staff, the Design Engineer is responsible for in-house design and the validation of subcontractors designs for wells, pipe schemes, reservoirs, and other water-related infrastructure projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Visit project sites to verify infrastructure assessments and provide brief written report on findings during the visit;

• Gain pertinent water-related information from interviewing provincial, regional, and local engineering and social stakeholders;

• Design pipe schemes of various capacities including water options, reservoirs, piping and distribution networks using AutoCAD for presentations to project staff and stakeholders;

• Consult with project technical staff on the best options and viable solutions for water (wells and pipe schemes) and sanitation projects in rural and peri-urban areas;

• Visit water infrastructure constructions projects in progress to ensure proper technical compliance;

• Guide subcontractors on their work and give them feedback

• Evaluate the design work of subcontractors

• Prepare technical designs, drawings, and specifications for the implementation of water supply projects;

• Review and revise subcontractor water supply projects designs (wells, basic pipe schemes and other needed water-related projects) as appropriate;

• Survey rural areas rural towns to advise technical proposals for locations with poor access to potable water supply;

• Develop standardized designs and technical specifications for required requests for proposals;

• Provide technical support to water project stakeholder and partners, including provincial RRD and subcontractors;

• Assess appropriateness of technology selected for projects;

• Prepare guidelines for technical project surveys for water supplies for rural areas and towns;

• Provide technical support and assistance to the SWSS engineering department as required;

• Maintain technical documents of SWSS water supply projects designs;

• Develop and test new and appropriate technology technical solutions for basic water delivery systems and sanitation facilities different types of areas;

• Participate in infrastructure capacity building trainings and workshops as requested;

• Perform other duties that may be assigned.

Job Requirements

Educations:

University Degree B.S.c Civil Engineer,

WORK EXPERIENCE:

Minimum 5 years of professional experience in the related field
Ability to interface between government and communities
Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to maintain a rapid and demanding pace of work in also a must
Experience working in the region or similar environments and on rapid transition programs in insecure environments desirable.
Proficient in MS Office and internet applications
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate

Work experienced of USAID funded project is a clear plus.

SKILLS:

Working knowledge of English, ability to communicate clearly and coherently orally and in writing Excellent interpersonal skills, including patience diplomacy, willingness to listen and respect for colleagues
Must be capable of working both individually and as part of a team must also be able to create a supportive working relationship among all project teams

LANGUAGES:

Knowledge of spoken and written English, Dari and Pashto

GENERAL:

Excellent analytical and organizational skills
Willing to regularly conduct site visits to the project work location
Strong diplomatic and interpersonal skills are desired
Knowledge of USAID procedures is desired
Tactfulness, enthusiasm to the job Good human relation skills, integrity and ability to work with minimum supervision and under pressure
