Job Summary

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Family Planning, Maternal & Newborn Health Master Trainer for an anticipated multiyear USAID National Health Technical Assistance Program (NHTAP) in Afghanistan. The activity aims to improve health outcomes through improved utilization of high-impact, sustainable, accessible, and quality health and nutrition services across Afghanistan. The program will enhance the Afghan Ministry of Public Health’s capacity to support the health systems and policies required to provide high-quality services across Afghanistan and ultimately improve health outcomes among Afghans nationally.


This position is subject to project award and funding.


Job summary :

The Family Planning, Maternal & Newborn Health Master Trainer will be an FHI 360 employee working in and placed at the NHTAP office in Kabul. Under the guidance of the Family Planning, Maternal & Newborn Health Technical Specialist, the Family Planning, Maternal & Newborn Health Master Trainer will be responsible for designing or adapting/enriching existing training materials, organizing and coordinating all trainings, creating a positive learning environment, assist with ensuring all training and mentorship is conducted at national standards, encouraging and motivating trainees, and contributing to technical assistance activities with government and consortium partner teams. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Designing or adapting national FP or other reproductive health-related training and mentorship/supportive supervision guidelines and manuals to reflect global evidence and national policies and to employ adult learning approaches. 
  • Designing or adapting national maternal and newborn health-related training and mentorship/supportive supervision guidelines and manuals to reflect global evidence and national policies and to employ adult learning approaches.  
  • Conducting training needs assessments prior to designing any training and training quality assurance conducted during training's by regional/provincial trainers and partner organizations.
  • Conducting Training of Trainer sessions for maternal, critical care, neonatal health-related, and FP and reproductive health-related training's for the teams from government and implementing partners and BPHS implementers at national and provincial levels.
  • Developing training schedules as per the training modules/contents
  • Assisting MoPH and BPHS teams in designing pre-tests and post-tests for the trainings to screen and assess the trainees before and after the trainings and designing mentorship quality assurance instruments.
  • Developing or compiling the required FP, reproductive, maternal, and newborn health training materials/ aids and ensuring they are effectively used during the training sessions.
  • Providing support to regional and provincial teams in cascaded FP, maternal and newborn training, particularly for on-the-job assessments and focused training/skills improvement at facility level.  
  • Leading and ensuring quality within the follow up/supportive supervision visits at the project sites.
  • Leading capacity building of newly-trained trainers, through their inclusion as co-facilitators initially then acting as their co-facilitator and mentor.
  • Sharing and reporting on new lessons learned (from the field) with the team, applying these experiences to training practical components.
  • Participating in the debriefing sessions and delivering presentations to the implementing partner and BPHS staff and MoPH to share follow up visit findings with them for quality assurance and action planning.
  • Participating in any forums where needed to represent NHTAP.
  • Any other relevant tasks assigned by the supervisor.


Job Requirements

·      Bachelor’s degree in health, public health or related field; medical training as a doctor, nurse or midwife preferred.

·      3-5 years of technical and training assistance experience in health, particularly in FP, well women’s, maternal and newborn care areas. Experience as a master trainer highly desired.

·      Proficiency with database management software, Microsoft Office Suite, and on-line search tools required.

·      Excellent oral and written communication skills in Dari; Pashto fluency is highly desired.

·      Has sensitivity to cultural diversity and understanding of the political, contextual, and ethical issues in assigned areas, particularly regarding spousal consent issues and patient autonomy.

·      Articulate and professional and able to communicate in a clear, positive fashion with trainees and stakeholders.

·      Prior work experience in a similar position within a non-governmental organization (NGO), government agency, or private company.

·      Excellent organizational and analytical skills and strong ability to manage and meet multiple tasks.

·      Working knowledge of training concepts, practices and follow-up mentoring with providing technical support for FP, maternal, EmONC, and newborn health activities/ projects highly desired.
