About Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) :


Afghan Journalists Safety Committee (AJSC) is an independent, nonprofit organization that supports press freedom in Afghanistan and works towards the advancement of journalist safety and rights so that they can report in a safe and fearless environment. AJSC is based in Kabul and maintains a presence in every province of Afghanistan. AJSC has a board of advisors composed of well-known media workers and civil society activists. AJSC’s executive section has official representatives in eight regions of the country and an unofficial focal point in the remaining 26 provinces. This has enabled AJSC to establish representation throughout the country and provide media workers with necessary help when needed. AJSC provides a host of services for journalists, advocates for press freedom and offers emergency assistance for journalists in need. Monitoring, verifying, documenting and reporting threats and violence against journalists is also a key mandate of AJSC. A holistic approach to enhancing press freedom and safety of journalists has been key to AJSC success.

Job Summary:

Overall purpose:

The purpose of this job position is to review, analyze and put into action result based advocacies for participation of women media workers in the media sector of Afghanistan and their capacity development plans and relevant training so that they can achieve further senior and technical positions by having the necessary and market-driven and demanded skills and knowledge. This role also ensures that, the working environment especially in the media sector is safe and promising to attract new generations of women media workers for work and career development.  

The purpose of this position is also to develop and coordinate the implementation of AJSC advocacy plan for women media workers and ensure that key women media workers, media organizations and/or stakeholders and partners play important roles in facilitating the conduct of activities by the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee.  

The incumbent is responsible to maintain close contact with all media workers, media organizations and/or stakeholders and partners and maintain an effective and safe network of communication for further improving of advocacy activities of AJSC. 

Duties & Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities

 Establishment and management of Women Media Workers Advocacy Group and network where the women media workers can directly discuss their concerns, work-related problems and other issues affecting their participation and growth in the media sector. 

 Preparing annual work plan addressing the urgent and emergent needs of women media workers in Afghanistan. 

 Receiving, inspecting women media worker’s complaints and conducting timely advocacy actions and follow-ups with the media owners, government and other counterparts. 

 Conducting and attending interviews through media outlets (TV, Radio, Print and Digital) to ensure active representation and position of AJSC works and goals for the Afghanistan media. 

 Building and maintaining professional relationship and cooperation with other organization working for the development of women participation particularly in the media sector. 

 Conducting quarterly advocacy meetings with the women media workers and media owners to ensure their participation and role in the media sector is safeguarded and further promoted. 

 Prepare weekly and monthly updates, quarterly and annual reports on the status of afghan women media workers and provide corrective recommendations and viable solutions with full consideration of gender sensitivity approaches and in accordance to the legal and cultural contexts of Afghanistan. 

 In partnership with the team, lead the development, implementation and monitoring of the organization advocacy priorities and specifically lead on assigned advocacy plans.

 Coordinate work related affairs with the advocacy and program team to ensure all team is working on the same direction and for the same objectives. 

 Assist in developing and implementation of advocacy strategy and feeding into the broader strategic vision for the organization. 

 Be responsible for ensuring the effective monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the team’s strategic advocacy objectives and approaches and work with colleagues and members to update and improve where necessary.

 Develop and utilize advocacy channels for the organization to achieve relevant advocacy objectives.

 Develop and maintain robust advocacy team approaches to promote the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization works. 

 Provide timely support and advisories to all other regional and provincial focal points related to the conduct of advocacy activities in accordance to the work plan. 

 Provide detailed analysis and reports for the management team and stakeholders on the status of media activities, safety and risks.

Additional responsibilities

 Assist the organization in drafting of reports and other administrative works that occasionally may happen during short deadlines.

 Any other tasks deemed necessary and appropriate by the immediate supervisor as per relevant regulations and scope of AJSC

Job Requirement:

Qualification and Experience:

 Shall have at least a bachelor’s degree from a reputable institution in the relevant field;

 Shall have at least 3 years’ relevant work experience; 

 Shall have ability to provide advice in developing AJSC’s functions and priorities;

 Shall be able to plan, organize, lead and monitor projects and activities;

 Shall be fluent in communicating in English, Dari and Pashto;

 Shall be proficient in computer applications.
