The following are the Career Center Services:
Career Counseling: (Coaching and Mentoring Sessions through individuals and selected panels.) Career Counseling is a process that will assist senior students and alumni to receive counseling about their ideas, concerns, career development plans, and other major options to assess their interests, abilities and values;
Soft Skill Trainings (a- Employability Skills & b- Personal Development Skills);
Internships/Placements: Is an excellent way to give students exposure to the work place. It also provides work experience, references and contacts for future networking.
Employment Relations: Career Center acts as a bridge between USWDP target students and the private sector. To enhance employability of students with companies and employing organizations that has positions and requires young talent. USWDP Career Center will organize Career Days and Job Fairs on and off campus to provide students the opportunities to network with potential employers. Career Centers will maintain a strong link with UIACs (University Industry Advisory Council) to facilitate internships and other job opportunities for USWDP trained students. Tracking and following up with alumni and networking students with alumni who are now working;
IT/Computer Trainings: According to the USWDP Employment Sector and University Graduates Assessment in 2014/15, the survey respondents who received a basic computer training at university considered these trainings to be adequate but again, did not seem to have an excellent knowledge of what they have learnt (Average grade of 59). Today, employer’s offices are mostly equipped with Computerized Systems and IT in Afghanistan. Therefore, employers are seeking those skilled job seekers who have computer skills beyond dedication on specific Fields. Hence, graduate students need to acquire computer skills, besides the Soft Skills Training, to be able to compete in the job market.
Mobile Soft Skills Trainings: As a result of employer demand, USWDP conducts a 30-hour soft skills training course at target universities. The course encompasses 9 modules designed to improve personal and pre-employability skills. Students who complete the course and pass a written exam receive a certificate that serves as a qualification for private sector internships. The course is popular and fills up quickly, and USWDP has to turn many interested students away due to the high demand. The USWDP mobile soft skills application aims to extend the reach of the soft skills course to students who were not able to get a seat in the course, or who study on campuses where the course is not yet available. It should also catalyze and meet additional demand for the soft skills course, as the application will be designed to be engaging for users.
Job fairs: Meet with employers in an informal setting and learn more about job and internship opportunities offered by companies, government agencies, and non-profit organizations where you might like to work. Some employers and fairs are focused on students from specific colleges or majors, but many are interested in all students from any major.
Students Information Exchange Sessions: Where students’ forums get together to discuss their career paths/successes and challenges. These debates are mostly organized between the on-campus students and alumni groups.
Duties & Responsibilities:
The Head of Career Center/Career Counselor is responsible for supervising the operations of the USWDP Career Center as well as supports learning through a comprehensive career services program, which includes career counseling, job search assistances (resume writing, cover letter writing, interview skills, identifying job leads, using the internet, etc.), internship assistance, and other areas related to career success. These services are provided to current senior students and alumni of USWDP target universities. This person will work collaboratively with the management of the target university specifically with the Vice-Chancellor for Students Affairs and the Directorate of Students Affairs while engaging alumni, UIACs and employer partners to promote the career development of our students. The Head of Career Center/Career Counselor is a pivotal and highly visible individual, working closely to ensure activities at USWDP Career Center are aligned with USWDP Academic Program Development, Students Affairs Department of the University and the public-private employment partnerships.
The (Head of Career Center/Career Counselor) is a full-time, professional position located at the USWDP project office in Kabul Medical University and The Head of Career Center/Career Counselor will report to Senior Manager, University Support.
Key responsibilities and tasks of the position include:
Manage the USWDP Career Center in one of the ten USWDP target universities.
Guide and mentor a small team within the Career Center and make sure that everyone is effectively delivering their services. Oversee the routine activities at the Career Center and provide technical assistance to the team.
Collect relevant reports, feedbacks and suggestions from students, university officials, partners and employers and alumni and send them to USWDP main office for consideration.
Collect and disseminate information about Career Center functions.
Develop progress and situational reports.
Liaison with University counterparts on coordination of students’ career development demands.
Ensure that procedures for student selection adhere with USWDP policy, particularly ensuring equality and diversity.
Career Counseling/Student Affairs:
Provide and facilitate day-to-day Career Counseling sessions for the students.
Harmonize and connect students to other available counseling resources including the Career Center Counseling panels if students’ demands are too specific and beyond the generic counseling limits.
Assist the Soft Skills Training (SST) Trainer on coaching students in writing effective CVs and cover letters, interviewing successfully, and other soft skills needed to land a job;
Guide students to discover their career interests and possible job matches;
Maintaining databases of active jobs, internships, and employed alumni;
Organize job fairs, site visits to employers, and direct contacts between students and employers;
Organize workshops, guest talks by professionals, design and deliver power point presentations and other career-related activities.
Help students develop career plans and inform them about the status and demand of the local job market.
Identify students’ skill gaps and come up with plans/strategies to deal with them
Run small group sessions or larger presentations on all aspects of careers work and topics related to personal development.
Plan and organize career fairs and conventions;
Keep up to date with labor market information, legislation, and professional and academic developments by visiting employers, training providers and training events run by educational and professional bodies.
Disseminate employment and internship opportunities to appropriate organizations and students.
Participate in employer development activities including employer visitations, advisory councils and on-campus recruiting, and the development of job and internship leads.
Lead the awareness and outreach initiatives on students’ career center activities.
Provide representation in various university committees and university-wide events to enhance awareness and visibility of the USWDP Field office.
Encourage faculty to maintain equitable opportunities for students by posting jobs and internships sent directly to department from the Career Gear database.
Serve as program liaison to all program partners including business and industry, non-governmental organizations, and governmental organizations.
Work in cooperation and take advice from UIAC to facilitate student’s job hunt in the local job market.
Place students in to internships and obtain continues mentoring to the interns to ensure both interns and employers are satisfied and that internships keep in good quality.
In cooperation with the internship supervisor, monitor, evaluate and keeps records of all student internship experiences.
In the course of this work, with approval of the Senior Manager, meet with officials, specialists, technical counterparts, implementing partners and key stakeholders to help foster the sustainability of USWDP programs.
Undertake other tasks as assigned by the Senior Manager or Deputy Chief of Party (DCoP)- Organizational Performance or Chief of Party.
Lead the provision of internships, regular jobs and other experiential learning opportunity for the students and alumni.
Liaison and maintain relationships with public-private partners to promote placement opportunities.
Be the secretary of University Industry Advisory Council (UIAC)
Administer and interpret career-related (pre –and post-training) assessments to assist in self-understanding and decision-making.
Conduct systematic and ongoing assessment of qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the training offered and student learning outcomes.
Manage and make sure Career Center database (soft skill, IT training participant information and post-training evaluations and pre- and post-training scores) is functioning and maintained properly.
Ensure that the Career Center resource tracking sheet is properly and accurately managed on monthly basis.
Collect information on the number of students enrolled at the university (annually), and number of student who graduated from the university (annually)
Internship data (5 different forms per intern currently that should be filled out on quarterly basis.
Key qualifications of the (Head of Career Center/Career Counselor) include:
University Education (Master’s Degree in Engineering preferably: (Civil Engineering, Hydraulic & Horticulture, Electro mechanics, Geomatics & Cadaster, Water resources & Environment, Geology & Mines, and Computer & Informatic) with five years’ work experience and/or Bachelor’s Degree in the above – mentioned fields with seven years’ experience in higher education and/or student career services.
Experience and ability to translate data analysis into marketing actions and activities that promote the Career Center, on and beyond the university.
Experience in building relationships with the public and private sectors.
Experience with international development organizations or donor funded development projects is preferred.
Strong inter-personal skills and written and oral communication skills.
Ability to organize and effectively follow through on multiple complex tasks.
Good judgment and decision-making skills.
Knowledge of Afghan culture, international norms of conduct, and the current political situation in Afghanistan.
Experienced in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint essential as is ability to carry out general analysis of data (e.g. student, faculty, and university statistics).
Ability to write and verbally communicate proficiently in English, Dari and Pashto.
Minimum of three years’ prior supervisory experience preferred.
Ability to work both independently and in a team.
Excellent coordination and communication skills.
