The French Medical Institute for Mothers and Children (FMIC) was founded in 2006 is a unique public-private partnership between the Governments of Afghanistan and France, a French NGO – La Chaine de L’Espoir/Enfants Afghans and the Aga Khan Development Network through the Aga Khan University Hospital. FMIC embodies a sign of hope for the medical care mothers and children in Kabul. The Institute has risen to the challenge of charting a course towards sustainable health solutions for Afghanistan. It is the first ISO certified hospital in Afghanistan, aiming to provide compassionate, accessible, cost-effective, high quality care services to the population of Afghanistan. Currently the hospital provides161-bed inpatient care for children and adults, including 15 beds for pediatric intensive care, 17 bed adult cardiac care with a state of art cardiac catheterization laboratory, 52 new beds for maternal care, 63 beds allocated for pediatric medical and surgical units and a 14 bed neonatal intensive care unit. Six operation theatres, a department of radiology which includes CT-Scan and MRI capabilities, a state-of-the-art laboratory, a 24 hour pharmacy service and outpatient services for the adult population in medical and surgical specialties. FMIC also runs a Postgraduate Medical Education considering a training hub for healthcare professionals. Through its e-Health programme, FMIC offers telemedicine and eLearning services to hospitals in Bamyan, Badakhshan and Kandahar in Afghanistan and Khorog in Tajikistan. FMIC is working towards expansion of its health services towards establishing a comprehensive 400 bed Academic Medical Complex in Kabul, which will serve not only the Afghan population but Central Asia as well, as a medical Center of excellence.”

Job Summary:

The responsibilities include providing service in Clinical Laboratory of the hospital including all sections of Clinical Pathology, education and training to PGME students of Pathology, plus all attendant educational activities, which may include lecturing and small group active learning in laboratory facilities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Regular Responsibilities

1)     Laboratory Responsibilities (Duties as a Clinical Pathologist)

  • Supervise all the technical staff in the clinical laboratory for the sections of Microbiology, Biochemistry, Haematology, Blood Bank, Serology, and Molecular Pathology.
  • Implement quality assurance system (internal quality control and external quality assessment).
  • Verify all results for the tests performed in the clinical laboratory.
  • Ensure timely reporting of all test results performed at the clinical laboratory.
  • Implement safety regulations within the premises of the clinical laboratory.
  • Ensure availability of quality control reagents/standards and its regular utilization.
  • Advise on methods of collection of specimens for specialized laboratory tests.
  • Advise on choice of different culture media for growth and identification of various pathogens.
  • Report interpretation and handling of patient/physician complaints.
  • Train all technicians, technologists and residents to perform tests in all sections of the clinical laboratory. Conduct training sessions on regular basis for the laboratory staff.
  • Participate in learning sessions/CME activities.
  • Visit to general practices, hospitals and companies for feedbacks and short academic presentations.
  • Remain updated and follow infection control procedures within the laboratory & institution. Monitor infection control protocols and create awareness for the clinical areas of the hospital.
  • Liaise with referring physicians and coordination with marketing team.
  • Liaise with other laboratories in region to achieve service benefits.
  • Monitor plans in collaboration with biomedical engineer regarding preventive maintenance of equipment and backup plans where ever possible in case of equipment breakdown.
  • Keep records, prepare and update written reports and procedure manuals.
  • Provide highly technical/ complex information clearly to physicians, medical personnel & the public.
  • Review and follow current literature to maintain state-of-the-art methodology and technologies in the field of clinical pathology.
  • Ensure the smooth functioning of all the equipment & availability of materials used in the laboratory



2)     Faculty Responsibilities (PGME Program Pathology)

  • S/he has to prepare for the MoPH faculty exam. Below responsibilities must perform by a clinical pathologist.
  • Supervise the Program in accordance with the valid agreement.
  • Oversee the development and provision of educational programs that address the teaching and practical training of the students / residents.
  • Manage and supervise the administrative and operational activities of the Program.
  • Monitor all academic and didactic activities of participating residents.
  • Evaluate accomplishments of residents on a regular basis using multiple assessment methods such as class tests and assignments.
  • Prepare a monthly and an annual report on the activities of the Program.
  • Keep records regarding all activities related to the Program and ensure the confidentiality of records and information regarding resident's examinations.
  • Prepare and deliver lectures to the residents in the subject of Pathology.
  • Conduct and supervise practical training in the subject of Pathology.
  • Make purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide effective teaching strategies for the residents.
  • Encourage student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.
  • Evaluate the residents within his/her teaching assignment and provide progress reports as required.
  • Demonstrate a strong grasp of subject matter by using effective oral & written expression and by keeping current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory.
  • Assist on the ongoing curriculum revision process, including the revision of written courses of study.
  • Continue professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars and conferences.
  • Cooperate with the administration and Program Director/other program directors in planning appropriate in-service training programs.
  • Confer with resident on course materials; directing dissertations, theses; directing individual and group studies and practice; reviewing written examinations and papers; supervising independent study projects.
  • Take active part in resident recruitment, retention, and placement efforts.
  • Take active part in clinico-pathological meetings.

a.     PERIODIC RESPONSIBILITIES

a.     Set the practices and principles of basic laboratory operations, techniques and procedures utilized in the areas of microbiology, serology, biochemistry, haematology, transfusion medicine and molecular pathology.

b.    Ensure that the technical staff of the laboratory, including pathology residents, laboratory technologists and technicians, carry out the following activities with high quality in all the sections of clinical lab as below:


a)     Haematology & Blood Bank

  • Competent to examine blood smear/slide preparations for the detection of blood diseases.
  • Accurately read, interpret and record the results of haematologic tests.
  • Integrate instrument data, quality control and test principles for accurate result reporting.
  • Ensure the proper collection and analysis of laboratory data; enter, retrieve and process computer generated laboratory reports.
  • Perform procedures for quality control and quality assurance of tests performed in the section.

b)     Biochemistry

  • Competent to perform biochemistry analyses on clinical specimens for the diagnosis of disease.
  • Accurately read, interpret and record the results of biochemistry tests.
  • Integrate instrument data, quality control and test principles for accurate result reporting.
  • Ensure the proper collection and analysis of laboratory data; enter, retrieve and process computer generated laboratory reports.
  • Perform procedures for quality control and quality assurance of tests performed in the section.

c)     Molecular Pathology

  • Competent to perform PCR testing on clinical specimens for the diagnosis of disease.
  • Accurately read, interpret and record the results of molecular pathology tests.
  • Ensure the proper collection and analysis of laboratory data; enter, retrieve and process computer generated laboratory reports.
  • Perform procedures for quality control and quality assurance of tests performed in the section.

d)     Microbiology & Serology

  • Competent to perform microbiological and related biological examinations on clinical and environmental specimens for the isolation/detection and identification of microbial agents of disease.
  • Examine slide preparations for the detection of microbial agents.
  • Identify microorganisms to the genus and species level.
  • Interpret antibiotic sensitivity testing on various bacterial isolates.
  • Preparation of testing culture media, stains, chemicals, reagents and slides.
  • Perform serological tests to aid in diagnosis of communicable and other diseases.
  • Perform procedures for quality control and quality assurance of tests performed in the section.
  • Chair the Infection Control Committee of the institute and be able to develop infection control protocols and create awareness for the clinical areas of the hospital (additional responsibility only for Microbiologist).










Job Requirement:

Candidate should be a medical doctor having a MD or MBBS degree and post-graduate qualification in the subject of Clinical Pathology such as MD Pathology, PhD, FCPS (Pak), MRCPath/FRCPath (UK), Board Certification in Pathology (American Board of Pathology) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institute.
