The essence of marketing is finding the right balance between market demand and product offering. The major objective is attracting and retaining as many customers as possible for an organization. Marketing is taking on greater importance in banking, as commercial banks evolve into general financial services companies selling investment products and insurance in addition to traditional bank deposits and loans.
Duties & Responsibilities:
â€¢ assist in the development of telemarketing campaigns
â€¢ make recommendations to the division manager about budgetary needs of the marketing department
â€¢ edit and write advertising copy for use in promotions
â€¢ prepare general press releases for release to the news media
â€¢ coordinate special events such as branch openings
â€¢ promote the bankâ€™s presence in the community by participating in community functions
â€¢ review products and services of competing financial institutions and make suggestions about product changes to senior management.
Marketing Managers report to a divisional manager, such as the head of retail banking. Larger financial institutions often have marketing specialists assigned to each business group; they manage product development for different product lines and coordinate sales activities with their sales staff. Marketing Managers usally work a 40-hour week, but often work longer hours during marketing campaigns.
Education and Training
A four-year college degree is required and a Master degree prrefered , with courses in marketing and business administration. Courses in accounting or finance are helpful.
Experience, Skills, and Personality Traits
As banking becomes more segmented along product lines, individuals with brand management and product design experience will be increasingly in demand. Marketing Managers should have at least two yearâ€™s experience in banking, one year in direct sales, or five years of marketing experience.
