PURPOSE OF POSITION
World Vision Afghanistan requires a midwife to provide reproductive health services at Herat Maternity Hospital (HMH) in western Afghanistan.
The post holder’s role is to provide comprehensive interventions related to reproductive health care to women and babies admitted at HMH. She assumes professional responsibility and accountability for her practice, rendering her best clinical knowledge about sensitivity and respect to the human ethical rights of all clients irrespective of socioeconomic or ethnicity. She will apply her up to date obstetrical knowledge and skills to provide meticulous care to safe the lives of mothers and their babies. She is a team member of HMH that includes doctors (including ob/gyn specialists), nurses, and paramedical and community health workers.
Midwife’s Responsibilities:
• Give the necessary supervision, care and advise to women during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period
• Conduct deliveries on her own and care for the newborn infant and have sound professional judgment in case of life threatening incidences.
• Manage complications in pregnancy and childbirth, in accordance with the principles of basic emergency obstetric care
• Provide primary care to women of reproductive age, in accordance with the Basic Package of Health Services (BPHS)
• Provide all non-surgical methods of family planning, and counseling for surgical methods
• Obtain specialized assistance as necessary (consultation or referral)
• Share knowledge, skill and expertise with midwifery, medical and nursing students, and nursing and resident staff, in management of pregnancy and childbirth, acting as a clinical preceptor
• Perform limited, select administrative duties such as patient charting, recording and reporting of data; clinic and/or facility management (as required); or coordination of specific educational or outreach programs
• Follow established departmental policies, procedures and objectives; continuous quality improvement initiatives; safety, environmental, and infection prevention standards
• Participate in provision of 24-hour, 7-day maternity service, which may require evening, night or on-call duty
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The incumbent should be/have the following:
• Certified midwife from a nationally recognized school of midwifery from any part of Afghanistan.
• Knowledgeable about midwifery practice with extensive knowledge of the basic obstetric care and newborn care.
• Confident in exercising prudent professional response in case of life threatening situations arising from obstetrical situations.
• Knowledge of the most current issues in the areas of reproductive health and midwifery.
• Ability to collaborate with multiple personnel in a hospital setting and various maternity units.
• Oral and written communication skills, with specific emphasis placed on cultural sensitivity. Computer literacy.
• Ability to work independently and must possess professional skills in case of obstetrical emergencies to safe human life.
