Job Summary

This one-month contract (which can be split into two 2-week contracts) will involve initial work by long-distance to advise the staff on equipment and software purchases as well as conducting an initial assessment of their work. In Kabul, the consultant will work closely with Afghan staff in Kabul to learn the new equipment and improve their shooting and editing skills. The consultant will also work with Afghan trainers to devise a training program for regional reporters on the use of compact digital cameras. Finally, the consultant will act as liaison with international news outlets and agencies to help devise plans for marketing the photo service, possibly by long-distance after leaving Kabul.

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Initial work by long-distance to advise the staff on equipment and software purchases as well as conducting an initial assessment of their work.
2. To work closely with Afghan staff in Kabul to learn the new equipment and improve their shooting and editing skills.
3. To work with Afghan trainers to devise training program for regional reporters on the use of compact digital cameras.
4. To act as liaison with international news outlets and agencies to help devise plans for marketing the photo service, possibly by long-distance after leaving Kabul.
5. Other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

1. Five or more years of daily news and feature experience, preferably at least some with major media outlets or agencies
2. Experience training and mentoring journalists in challenging multicultural environments
3. Experience working with novice multimedia journalists preferred
4. Experience working in Afghanistan or elsewhere in the region strongly preferred
5. Well-established network of professional contacts
