Job Summary

The Public Information Officer under the direct supervision of Senior Communications Officer will be responsible for the following:

Duties & Responsibilities

• Drafting various media materials (including press releases and regular factsheets) in English, Dari and Pashto as required by the SCO.

• Regularly organize press trips for national and international media to raise awareness of the mine action programme.

• Coordinate the drafting of the MAPA monthly newsletter – work as part of the Communications Team to identify research and draft stories as well as with the Information Management team to ensure accurate and updated figures.

• Respond appropriately to incoming media and other public information requests. This could mean organizing interviews for and providing briefing for the Programme Director as MACCA spokesperson or, as required by the SCO, serve as spokesperson for MACCA on the ordinary, day-to-day matters such as mine action facts and published figures in close coordination with the information management team.

• Translating various media documents from English into Dari and Pashto (such as FAQs, media briefing documents) as well as coordinating and quality managing the translation of other key MACCA publications (such as the Annual Report and Integrated Operational Framework).

• Translate from Pashto and Dari into English various documents required by the SCO, for example case studies or media coverage in national media.

• Ensure MACCA website content is kept fresh including the immediate posting of news releases and press releases

• Demonstrate creative approach and generate fresh ideas for raising awareness of the mine action Programme through broadcast, print and online media.

• Ensure good coordination with the UNAMA Spokesperson’s Office

• Manage and file according to the coverage log of all MAPA media coverage.

• Develop a media database and maintain close relationships with national and international media.

• Track relevant issues in the national media and highlight to Front Office.

• Perform any other relevant duties as required by the Front Office

Job Requirements

• Bachelors Degree in communications, journalism, social sciences or related field; Or secondary education with 2 years of additional experience (Masters Degree is an asset).
• 5 years of practical experience in public relations or media fields
• Must have excellent communication skills in English, Pashto and Dari (both written and oral).
• Courteous with excellent communication and inter-personal skills, ability to deal effectively with reporters, public, media colleagues and MAPA members
• Flexible and adaptable to any situation
• Proficiency in computer with email as primary communication tool, website knowledge helpful
• Ability to work independently on several assignments simultaneously

Competencies:

• Established ability to develop strong media network
• Analytical and media relations skills with a good understanding of Afghanistan media issues
• Must be adept at managing and building relationships with editors and writers, pitching story ideas and tracking story placements
• Must be highly motivated team player
• Should have a sense of creativity and a commitment to exceed expectations
• Professional appearance and manner
