Job Summary

The purpose of this position is support the both the Country Director (CD) and the Protection and Advocacy Adviser (PAA) in conducting media and visibility activities and increasing NRC’s media profile nationally and internationally. The Public Information Officer (PIO) will assist the PAA in fulfilling NRC’s media objectives, contributing to internal and external information initiatives and assisting the field programmes and Oslo HQ in the production of high quality visibility and communications products. The position holder will also be responsible for circulating relevant media information to the NRC staff, including weekly national and internal media clippings, maintaining a photograph database and providing administrative assistance and support to the CD.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assist the PAA to draft visibility and communications products, including reports, brochures, briefing papers, newsletters, website stories and other relevant products.
Assist the PAA in implementing the NRC Access Communication Plan.
Liaise and contract with the print and other relevant companies for publication jobs, ensuring high quality and cost effective products consistent with relevant NRC logistics, administration and financial requirements.
Editor for NRC Afghanistan’s Internal newsletter: Drafting, collecting and editing articles and circulating to NRC’s staff.
Coordinate the layout and design of internal and external communications products, including newsletters, reports, pamphlets, posters, website stories, brochures, reports and the like.
Collect photographs (and possibly video) from NRC staff, visitors and the Regional Media Coordinator.
Maintain an NRC Afghanistan photograph and video database with captions, for use in visibility, media and advocacy products.
Collect relevant media headlines and on-line articles and circulate to relevant programme staff each week or according to need.
Assist the PAA in organizing media visits and preparing media packs.
Submit monthly reports on activities according to agreed work plan and assist the PAA in preparing daily, weekly and monthly reports as required.
Initiate, maintain and promote a NRC library.
Act as focal point for Afghan media requests.
Monitor news and media reports relevant to NRC Afghanistan and share internally with NRC staff.
Act as focal point for NRC Afghanistan’s internal communication needs, including liaising with NRC’s provincial media focal points.
Provide administrative assistance to the CD, organising diaries and making appointments, developing and maintaining an NRC contacts database and, occasionally, taking notes or dictation at meetings.
Undertake any additional duties at the request of management.

Job Requirements

Understanding of humanitarian relief work and development concepts.
Excellent teamwork skills and ability to build good relations both internally and externally.
University degree in social sciences, journalism, media or public relations (or equivalent work experience in media or public information work).
Experience working for an NGO desirable, preferably the humanitarian sector and preferably in media or communications roles.
High level of English both written and oral, good writing and speaking skills in Dari, Pashto is also desirable.
High level of computer literacy (MS Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc).
Knowledge of layout and design software desirable.
Knowledge and experience of print/production techniques.
Journalism, media and/or publication experience.
Ability to meet tight deadlines and to work independently.
Ability to work after normal working hours in case of tight deadlines.
Ability to travel to NRC’s field project sites in the provinces
