Integrity Watch Afghanistan (IWA) is an independent research and advocacy organization based in Kabul. ABOUT THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PILLAR:
The Research and Development Pillar at IWA aims to develop new and ground-breaking empirical research in order to set the agenda, influence decision-makers and bring to the public’s attention non-documented and non-explored issues related to integrity, corruption, accountability and transparency. Further, it aims to consolidate the basis of current knowledge on such issues by updating or expanding the existing empirical data and analysis. Current projects include: politics of aid effectiveness, peacebuilding and corruption, Afghan experiences and perceptions of corruption, transparency and accountability of extractive industries, integrity of basic social or public services and corruption in land distribution.

The current research position will aim to increase the knowledge on the relationship between media and corruption in Afghanistan. It may consider both historic and new patterns of media attitudes and practices towards corruption and integrity. It will look at both the legal and institutional environments as well as more sociological factors such the driving power of ethics and deontology. Particular focus will be made on the political economy of the media and financial incentives offered by private businesses. The research will combine qualitative and quantitative methods building on existing data, but also generating new information whenever necessary.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
• Develop research tools, methodology and analysis
• Conduct interviews and focus group discussions with relevant actors, in particular journalists and media managers, Afghan and international media experts, state officials, private sector representatives, watchdog agencies, etc…
• Lead, coordinate and organize quantitative surveys if necessary
• Write up research findings and reports (using Word and PowerPoint)
• Contribute to the dissemination of research findings to different audiences
• Produce replicable models for potential monitoring programs
• Develop with the advocacy team a series of lobbying and policy making activities based on the analysis and monitoring results
• Help organize the monitoring and reporting of significant events in Afghanistan related to corruption, accountability and integrity of the media sector
• Actively participate in the definition of the research program on transparency and integrity of the media and broader issues surrounding it
• Train national staff in research skills
• Liaise with governmental and non-governmental agencies working on the integrity of the media
• Liaise with international institutes and universities for training and knowledge production purposes
• Liaise with the Office Manager regarding logistics for field travels
• Report to the Director of Research and Development

Job Requirement:

Education • A master degree or an above degree in journalism, political science, sociology, political economy or any other relevant field

Experience
• At least three years’ experience of conducting research in social science or extensive experience in one of the following areas: media management and journalism; ethics management; post-war economic governance; private sector; corporate responsibility

Knowledge, Skills and abilities

• In-depth knowledge of some of the following: media and journalism; post-conflict governance; anti-corruption; private sector development and privatization; media in developing countries;
• Exceptional analytic and writing skills, preferably in English, with proven experience in writing reports and briefing papers
• Experience of working with people from different backgrounds, including journalist, civil servants, MPs, government officials, members of the international community, corporate world and civil society partners and activists.
• Capacity to develop research tools, monitoring models and training materials
• Very strong interpersonal skills and ability to mix well with people of all backgrounds;
• Adaptable, committed and flexible attitude;
• Preferable to have strong Dari, and/or Pashto skills;
• Good knowledge of the Afghan media
• Some knowledge of Afghan society, politics and economy
