The most common task of the Safety Manager is to check first how to take care the safety and health of all the site workers. Consequently, he will develop the safety and security plan including integrated solid waste management within the site premises as recommended by the Head Office Environmental/Safety Manager.
The Safety Manager shall be assisted by the Safety Officer in the development and implementation of the programs design for proper safety and health protection of workers within the site premises. The environment within the vicinity of the project site shall be protected from any contamination caused by the solid waste generated from the construction site.
The major component of the plans that would be taken into consideration by the Safety Manager with the assistance of the Safety Officer shall be the following:
• To investigate the geography of the site and any adjacent place to source out ground water for site use if in case outside source is not available.
• To survey the area for solid waste disposal generated from site in order to maintain proper hygiene.
• To coordinate with the Client and/or the Project Consultants on the proper disposal of excess materials generated during site preparation and subsequent construction works. Materials such as rotten woods, boulders, excess excavation soil that could not be utilized as a filling materials, crops, roots, brushes, down timber as well as removal and possible transfer of trees to any location designated by the Client and/or the Consultants shall be properly handled.
• To educate site workers through fliers or announcement posted on the bulletin board on the proper disposal of the solid waste such as food stuff, disposable cups and the likes, the proper use of toilets and lavatory, etc. in order to maintain cleanliness at the site premises all the times.
• To provide a comprehensive plan, signboards containing information about hazardous area, emergency exit point to ensure protection of life and properties.
• To promote construction efficiency through selective use of safe work practices and maintaining safe working conditions.
• To orient the site workers the proper use of safety gadgets in an identified hazardous area to prevent any accident and possible loss of life.
• To conduct daily safety meeting with other sections representatives to ensure smooth performance of the work and to keep accident at minimum or zero tolerance during construction period.
