Organizational Setting

FAO Afghanistan is investing, across all 34 provinces, in resilience reinforcing actions that focus on protecting agriculture livelihoods and local ecosystems, boosting local production of nutritious foods and cash-incomes, and safeguarding critical agriculture sectoral development gains achieved over the past couple of decades through revitalizing rural markets and economy. In 2022-2023, FAO will, under the life-saving assistance Outcome (1) of the UN Transitional Engagement Framework (TEF), focus on the following four priority actions: (i) Safeguarding Wheat Seed Security, (ii) Enhancing Local Production of Nutritious Food, (iii) Livestock Protection and Dairy Sector Support, and (iv) Restoring Irrigation Structures to Boost Cash Incomes. Additionally, FAO will contribute towards resilience building activities under Outcome 2 of the TEF.

Job Summary:

Reporting Lines

The Technical Assistant (Training) will work under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative and the direct supervision of the National Professional Officer (Programme) / Emergency Response Coordinator.


Technical Focus

Support with the development of technical training materials and conduct associated trainings on activities related to home gardening, wheat seed, summer crop, cash-based intervention, IPM, livestock husbandry, Fodder crop, market linkages, post-harvest management, on-farm irrigation and poultry activities.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Lead the preparations/planning design implementation and monitoring of all training activities (home gardening, wheat seed, summer crop, cash based intervention, IPM, livestock husbandry, Fodder crop, market linkages, post-harvest management, on-farm irrigation and poultry activities).
  • Coordinate and organize training to the trainers on home gardening, wheat seed, summer crop, cash based intervention, IPM, livestock husbandry, Fodder crop, market linkages, post-harvest management, on-farm irrigation and poultry activities.
  • Communicate training strategies initiatives with FAO Regional Offices and implementing partners and develop/improve agricultural trainings materials in addition to testing and reviewing the created materials.
  • Develop the trainer/training manual/modules on the above mentioned topics and support the translation of these modules into Dari & Pashto as well as the development of IEC / learning materials thereon.
  • Collect and follow, with the implementing partners, reports of trainings and participant attendance databases.
  • Develop an assessment plan for a rapid capacity assessment of implementing partners on the above mentioned trainings.
  • Support training of internal and/or external enumerators on above mentioned trainings.
  • Establish data collection system to track and follow trainings provided by the implementing partners to the projects beneficiaries.
  • Undertake on-site monitoring - at the community level / in all the project areas - on the application of technical training in practice by the farmers and provide related technical backstopping across all humanitarian response projects;
  • Lead training evaluation through the implementing partners and about the knowledge and skills of beneficiaries who received training to supporting adapting the training methods based on participant feedback.
  • Provide technical inputs in the establishment of the Community-Based Drought Early Warning System in FAO’s humanitarian response projects areas.
  • Perform any other related duties as required.

Job Requirement:



Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in agriculture, livelihoods, food security or closely related field.
  • A minimum of three years of relevant experience in developing associated material and conducting agriculture-related trainings.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and the local languages (Pashto and/or Dari); 
  • National of Afghanistan.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Experience in designing and conducting trainings (assess training needs, writing training/learning objectives, design training, run simulations, evaluate training and assess participant learning);
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate multi-day trainings with large multi-cultural groups;
  • Experience with peer-to-peer learning and self-assessment;
  • Work experience with an international humanitarian or development organization;
  • Experience designing and delivering field programmes is desirable;
  • Strong communication and presentation skills;
  • Ability to work both with minimal supervision and as part of a team;
  • Ability to deliver outputs by agreed deadlines, sometimes at very short notice;
  • Ability to establish effective working relations with persons of different national and cultural backgrounds.
