The Translator is responsible to the Executive Director and/or Deputy Executive Director of AREDP and is responsible for performing translation related activities, including: a) Translate drafts and documents from Dari or Pashtu into English and vice versa (English into Dari or Pashtu), mainly for use within project team and meetings b) Translate assessment reports from Dari or Pashtu into English. Translate the final project report and its components from Dari or Pashtu into English and from English into Dari or Pashtu, as needed; c) Translate legal documents and official correspondence in a concise manner from English to Dari or Pashtu and from Dari or Pashtu to English as requested.; and d) Provide oral interpretation for international project staff and other non Dari or Pashtu speakers at presentations and selected community based presentations.
Reporting to the Executive Director of the AREDP the Translator shall:
• Translate drafts and documents from Dari into English and vice versa (English into Dari), timely and efficient manner, mainly for use within project team and meetings;
• Efficiently translate documents for publication from English into Dari and from Dari into English;
• Translate assessment reports, training manuals from Dari into English or vice versa. Translate the final project report and its components from Dari into English and from English into Dari, as needed;
• Upon request, and for interpretation and translation purposes, attended project meetings and conferences, training seminars, hearings and sessions
• When required, to act as ad hoc interpreter in meetings, conferences and in writing, according to needs;
• Translation of correspondence from English into Dari and vice versa;
• Oversaw, proofread, and edited the translation done by freelance translators.
• Translate legal documents and official correspondence in a concise manner from English to Dari and from Dari to English as requested.
• Oversee the meeting preparation and reporting of the meetings, such as preparation of agenda, taking necessary correspondence, taking minutes and preparing meeting reports as requested;
• Undertake an inventory of all AREDP Project documentation, cataloguing and neatly filing for future reference.
• Desired that skills in Pashtu for translation from and to English
ORAL INTERPRETATION:
• Provide oral translation (Dari and English and Pashtu) languages during international workshops, training programs, ceremonies and cultural events;
• Provide interpretation for international project staff and other non Dari or Pashtu speakers at presentations and selected community based presentations;
• Other interpretation and translation tasks as needed within the project implementation;
• Translation from English into Pashtu / Pashtu into English and/or Dari into Pashtu or Pashtu into Dari documents and interpretation at meeting within the same language frame. All that within the task list as mentioned above.
• Assistance to the other units within AREDP on substantive issues
• Remain flexible for travelling to provinces if required.
• Undertake any other duties directed by supervisor.
D. KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
The successful candidate will be able to work without direct supervision, pay attention to detail and will exhibit personal commitment, drive for results, efficiency, flexibility, respect for diversity, creative thinking and problem solving
1. Knowledge/Experience
• 1 to 2 years experience in translation both oral and non oral development projects/programs;
• Proven experience in report writing;
• Proven experience in the planning and scheduling of day-to-day activities for development programs;
• Good office administration skills.
2. Qualifications/Skill
• A Diploma or University degree in related field (Literature, Social Sciences or Economics) English literature is desired.
• Excellent communication, team working and problem solving skills.
• Fluency in written and spoken Pashto, Dari and English.
• Good computer skills, including proven experience using Microsoft Office packages with good typing skills.
3. Abilities
• Ability to work in a high pressure environment;
• Ability to multi-task and work under pressure;
• Ability to work independently and also as an effective team member
• Professionalism in appearance and demeanour; and
• Willingness to enhance knowledge through training and personal initiative.
• Willingness to travel different provinces with in Afghanistan and abroad.
